Liberty practicum in Michigan: license first, then the search

First, the license: Michigan's own

Michigan is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state. HB 4246 appears on the compact map as pending legislation, and pending is not membership. Liberty's Michigan pages name only a Michigan RN license, with no multistate option, so a compact license from Ohio, Indiana or Wisconsin won't cover a Michigan site.

A Michigan license takes more than an application form. Before it's issued, you'll need:

• one-time training in how to recognize human trafficking victims
• 2 hours of implicit bias training, taken in the 5 years prior to the license being issued
• a criminal background check

Build that into your timeline before your Gate course, not during it. Michigan hasn't enacted the APRN Compact either. The RN license for practicum page explains Liberty's rule across states.

What Michigan's board says about out-of-state programs

Nothing that we could find. Our search turned up no rule or guidance from the Michigan Board of Nursing that asks an out-of-state program for approval, or for notice, before it places students at Michigan clinical sites. The board's rules on approving programs (Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10301 and following) apply to programs located in Michigan, as does its Nursing Education Programs page. For licensure purposes, the board recognizes an out-of-state program by its ACEN, CNEA or CCNE accreditation instead of by board approval.

The board was not contacted, so treat this as the absence of a rule found, not a confirmation. Liberty's lookup already shows Michigan as approved; if you want certainty for your track, ask the practicum team.

Restricted practice and checking an NP preceptor

AANP rates Michigan as restricted practice, because NP prescribing of controlled substances requires physician delegation. It shapes how prescribing works at any Michigan site where FNP or PMHNP students train.

To receive NP specialty certification in Michigan, a person must hold a current Michigan RN license and be nationally certified by a certifying body the board recognizes. When you vet a Michigan NP preceptor, look for that specialty certification as well as the license. A preceptor incentive that doesn't reach Liberty students

Michigan's health department once paid preceptors. Its Clinical Preceptor Pilot Program, run by the Michigan State University College of Nursing together with MDHHS's Office of Nursing Programs, paid incentives to people precepting MSU students in Family NP and Psychiatric-Mental Health NP, tied to the hours they committed across two semesters. The pilot is over, and only MSU students were ever covered. We found no Michigan tax credit for preceptors that has been enacted. About 4.4 million people live in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metro. Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood, Lansing-East Lansing and Flint come next. Among the major systems are McLaren Health Care, Henry Ford Health, Corewell Health, Trinity Health Michigan and University of Michigan Health (Michigan Medicine). We have no record of Liberty agreements with any of them. Students in Community Health might begin with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
