Your RN license and a Liberty practicum: which state, which license

The rule on every Liberty state page

Liberty's state licensure pages carry the same core rule: to do practicum in a state, you need an active RN license for that state, or a multistate license where that state accepts one. The Texas page, a compact state, puts it this way: "the student must hold an active, Texas or Multi-State RN license."

The admission wording lines up with it. Liberty's DNP page says applicants must "hold an RN license in the state where the practicum will occur," and the FNP page asks for an active, unencumbered license there. So your license, not only your home address, decides where your practicum can happen.

Compact license or single-state license

A multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact is issued by your home state and recognized in other compact states. Connecticut's health department describes the effect for students plainly: RN students may practice there on a Connecticut license or on a multistate license from their compact home state. If your home state and your practicum state are both in the compact, a multistate license will usually satisfy Liberty's rule, but check the Liberty page for that state first.

If your practicum state is outside the compact, you need that state's own RN license. Liberty's California page, for example, says "the student must hold an active, California RN license." Per NCSBN's compact map, the states outside the compact are Alaska, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York and Oregon, with Massachusetts enacted but not yet implemented.

The same logic runs the other way. A license from a non-compact home state works only in that state, so practicum anywhere else would need a second license.

States where Liberty's pages ask for their own license

Liberty's FNP pages for eight states name only that state's RN license, with no multistate option. Six are outside the compact anyway. Two deserve a closer look.

Connecticut is the mismatch. The compact took effect there on October 1, 2025, yet Liberty's page, checked in September 2026, still names only a Connecticut license. Until Liberty updates it or tells you otherwise in writing, don't assume a multistate license will be accepted for a Connecticut site.

Arizona's extra line

Liberty's Arizona pages add a sentence the other states don't have. The PMHNP page says students completing practicum in Arizona "must hold both an Arizona APRN License and an Arizona Registered Nurse License," or a multistate RN license, and the FNP page repeats it.

The sentence can be read more than one way, and the page doesn't explain it. The Arizona State Board of Nursing's own advisory opinion, for comparison, asks APRN students in out-of-state programs for an unencumbered Arizona or multistate RN license. Before you accept an Arizona site, ask the practicum team exactly which licenses Liberty needs from you, and get the answer in writing.

Arizona is a compact state, so a student living there may already hold a multistate license, which makes the APRN wording easy to overlook until a site is ready to start. The Arizona page covers practicum there in more detail.

What each Liberty program asks for at admission

Admission rules differ slightly by program, and they matter because your practicum state follows from them.

• DNP, all tracks: an RN license in the state where the practicum will occur, within the 50 states
• FNP: an active, unencumbered RN license held in the state where the practicum will be held
• Post-BSN PMHNP: an RN license from an approved state, held in the practicum state
• PMHNP certificate: "An RN license from an approved state is required for admission."
• MSN: a current, active RN license in your current state of residence
• RN-to-BSN: an active RN license in your state of residence, verified in the first nursing course

MSN Nurse Educator, Nursing Administration, MSN/MBA and MSN/MSHA students may do practicum in Washington with an active Washington RN license; Liberty's other tracks aren't approved for practicum there. For state-by-state detail, the states hub links to every state page.

When your license or state changes

Tell Liberty promptly. Liberty's state pages say any change in your RN license status must be reported to the Online Student Support Coordinator. Keep every license you rely on current through each practicum term, since a lapse breaks the rule this page is about.

If you move, update your address for mail and file the State Change Notification form so Liberty records your new state; the myLU and Canvas page explains why the address change alone isn't enough. Liberty's licensure FAQ says staying continuously enrolled protects your place after a move, while a break in enrollment may mean reapplying under current rules.

A new state can also change which sites you can use and which license you need for them. If a practicum is already arranged, tell the practicum team before you move rather than after.

Searching where your license works
