Liberty practicum in Indiana: open to every track

Indiana's board stops at initial licensure

Accreditation by the Indiana State Board of Nursing, which sits within the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, applies to in-state nursing programs that lead to a first RN or LPN license. According to the board's nursing education page, it neither reviews nor accredits RN-BSN programs or any graduate-level nursing program. Its eligible-program rules at 848 IAC 1-2-4 reach only pre-licensure RN and PN programs.

Every Liberty online track is post-licensure: you're already an RN. We found nothing requiring board approval when an out-of-state RN-BSN or graduate program places students in Indiana. That removes one layer, not all of them. Liberty still reviews each site and preceptor, and Liberty says it can't control a facility's own onboarding requirements, so confirm your plan with Liberty's practicum team before you commit to a clinic.

Collaborative agreements and Indiana NP preceptors

Indiana is reduced practice in AANP's classification. In Indiana, some part of every NP's practice has to sit under a regulated physician collaborative agreement. For an FNP or PMHNP student, that means your NP preceptor works inside an arrangement that includes a physician, even if you rarely see that physician.

Liberty doesn't publish a list of FNP preceptor credentials, so ask the practicum team early whether the person you have in mind fits your track. The preceptor requirements page sets out what is known.

Putting an Indiana practicum together

1. Check your licenseIndiana's Nurse Licensure Compact membership took effect on July 1, 2020. For practicum in Indiana, Liberty's rule is met by an active Indiana license or by another compact state's multistate license.
2. Know who leads the searchNP students work with the practicum team, which aims to match you and welcomes your own leads. MSN students choose a facility and secure a preceptor site contract themselves.
3. Build a short listName practices and units within a distance you can sustain for a full term, not only the closest hospital.
4. Submit through the Gate coursePaperwork runs through Liberty's zero-credit Gate courses, the first a semester before your first NP practicum.
5. Wait for Liberty's approvalLiberty approves every site and preceptor before placement, so hold your start date until that approval arrives.

Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and the border metros

The Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood metro is Indiana's largest, at about 2.2 million people; Fort Wayne is the next largest wholly inside the state. The state's health systems include Parkview Health, Franciscan Health, Indiana University Health, Ascension St. Vincent and Community Health Network. None of these is a known Liberty partner; each is simply where a lot of Indiana care happens.

Two corners of the state sit inside other states' metros. The Chicago metro takes in about 729,000 Hoosiers, and the Louisville metro about 281,000.
