No preceptor yet, and your own leads have run dry

What “not matched yet” means on your track

Liberty describes placement for the FNP, both PMHNP DNPs and the PMHNP certificate as a “collaborative partnership” between you and a dedicated practicum team. The team's stated goal is to match each student with a preceptor and site. The same pages warn that the assigned term may not meet your first preference and that scarce preceptors can mean longer travel.

MSN tracks work differently. The current catalog has you secure a “student selected” facility and a preceptor site contract before your first practicum course, so a quiet inbox is not the team falling behind: the search is mostly yours. For the post-master's DNP, Liberty says it “will support” placement in an approved state. Knowing which model you are in tells you who should be doing what this week. Why the leads stop answering

Most dead ends come from a handful of fixable causes rather than a total absence of preceptors. Before you send another round of messages, check your search against this list.

• You are calling the same large health systems everyone else calls, and their student slots are already spoken for.
• The person you asked doesn't fit your course. An older Liberty PMHNP FAQ lists PMHNPs and psychiatrists as approved preceptors, and the MSN tracks ask for an MSN or doctorally prepared preceptor.
• Your RN license doesn't cover the state the clinic is in, so the lead could never have worked.
• Your message didn't say what you need: which course, which term, roughly how many hours and who handles the contract.
• You ruled out anything beyond a short drive, when Liberty itself says students may need to travel longer distances.

Every item on that list is within your control, which makes it the right place to start before you conclude that no preceptor exists.

Widen the search without breaking a rule

A wider search only helps if every new lead could actually be approved. Liberty's published rules set the edges.

• State. NP tracks can't do practicum in California, New York, Washington or DC, and the non-NP tracks have shorter lists of their own. See where Liberty won't place clinicals.
• License. Your RN license must be valid in the practicum state. Liberty's NP pages ask for that state's own license in Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada and Oregon.
• Setting. PMHNP students may use telehealth for up to 50% of practicum hours. The FNP track allows no telehealth sites.
• Preceptor type. Match the credential to the course before you ask. Our preceptor requirements page sets out what is public for each track.
• Workplace. The 2022-23 MSN handbook allows your own employer if the hours are unpaid, a Clinical Program Affiliation Agreement is in place and you work in a different unit. Details are on using your workplace.

Distance deserves a second thought too. If the practicum team offers a site and you turn it down because of the drive, Liberty says you will be asked to find a new site yourself.

Make the ask easy to say yes to

Preceptors turn down vague requests. A clinician who has never hosted a Liberty student needs to know what they are agreeing to before they will forward your email to a practice manager.

Put these in the first message

• Your track and the course, for example NURS 771 for FNP Practicum I or NURS 768 for PMHNP Practicum I.
• The term you are aiming for and the days you can offer.
• That Liberty's practicum team reviews every site and preceptor, so nothing is final until Liberty approves it.
• That the site paperwork runs through Liberty, and that any fee the site or preceptor charges is agreed directly with you under Liberty's rules.
• A short line on your RN background and the state your license covers.

Keep the practicum team in the loop

Working around Liberty's team slows everything down. Send new leads to APRN.DNPPracticum@liberty.edu as soon as a clinician shows interest, and say which leads have already declined so nobody repeats them. MSN students should use the contact their Gate course, NURS 527, gives them.

Keep your own file ready while you search. Liberty requires you to finish every step of the placement process and be fully compliant before practicum can start, so a lapsed immunization or BLS card in CastleBranch can cost you a lead that said yes. If a facility wants its own contract rather than Liberty's affiliation agreement, the 2022-23 MSN handbook warns that this may delay approval, so raise it early.
