Liberty's practicum placement process, from Gate course to day one

Two routes: matched for NP tracks, self-selected for MSN

Liberty runs two placement models, and your track decides which one you are on. For the FNP DNP, both PMHNP DNPs and the PMHNP certificate, Liberty's program pages describe a match: the goal is to pair each student with a preceptor and site, with you contributing leads. For the MSN tracks, the 2026-27 catalog puts the search in your hands. You pick an approved facility and bring the contract.

The post-master's DNP sits between the two. Liberty's state pages say the School of Nursing will support a practicum, mentorship or shadow placement in an approved state, without spelling out who finds the mentor.

All routes end in the same place: the School of Nursing reviews your paperwork, you become fully compliant, and only then do hours begin. The sections below follow Liberty's degree plans and program pages in order. Where Liberty does not publish a step, this page says so instead of filling the gap.

The NP path, step by step

This is the order for FNP and PMHNP students, drawn from the 2026-27 plan-of-study grids and the placement text repeated on every Liberty NP program page.

1. Gate 1, one semester earlyThe first zero-credit Gate course sits a semester before your first practicum: NURS 731 in semester 6 for FNP, ahead of NURS 771 in semester 7. Post-BSN PMHNP students take Gate 1 in semester 5. See what each Gate course collects.
2. Work with the practicum teamLiberty's NP pages call placement a “collaborative partnership between the student and our dedicated practicum team.” The practicum team searches, and you are asked to send local leads as well.
3. An offer, or your own leadThe team may provide a site, or your lead goes forward for review. The assigned term may differ from what you wanted, and travel may be longer than you hoped.
4. Become fully compliantBackground check, drug screen, the Immunization/Physical Exam Form and AHA BLS must all be current; the clearance list has the detail. Liberty's DNP page says students must “complete all required steps in the placement process and become fully compliant.”
5. Approval, then state noticesOnce the School of Nursing approves your practicum paperwork, it files any notice your state board requires before clinicals begin.
6. Your first practicum dayYou begin with your preceptor inside the practicum course. Liberty's 2023 DNP/APRN preceptor page asks preceptors to evaluate students through the InPlace evaluation tool.

The MSN path: your facility, your contract

MSN students in Nurse Educator, Nursing Administration, Community Health, Health Policy, Informatics and the MSN/MBA and MSN/MSHA duals start paperwork early. NURS 527, the MSN Practicum Gate, sits in the first semester, and the catalog says it must be passed “prior to beginning any practicum courses.”

Before you enroll in the first practicum course, such as NURS 677 or NURS 674, the catalog expects an educational site affiliation agreement with a facility you selected and a practicum contract with an approved preceptor. Informatics calls its version a practice experience site contract. Both documents are explained on the preceptor site contract page.

The 2022-23 MSN Student Handbook, the newest public edition, describes a two-step approval. The Practicum Coordinator approves registration for the first practicum course; then the course professor approves your goals and objectives and gives final approval to start. The same handbook says hours count only within course term dates, and only after you and your preceptor have met.

Post-master's DNP and RN-to-BSN

Post-master's DNP students clear NURS 828, the DNP Practicum Gate, before NURS 840. The practicum courses NURS 840 through NURS 843 are faculty-guided, and the catalog states: “All planned activities must receive faculty approval.” Liberty does not say publicly who locates the practicum mentor, so raise it early with the practicum inbox, APRN.DNPPracticum@liberty.edu. Liberty's state pages also rule out Washington and DC for this track, which matters before you approach anyone.

RN-to-BSN students have the lightest path. NURS 440 includes two eight-hour community shifts, 16 hours in total, and the course guide says you choose the location and preceptor, then submit both for faculty approval. The background check and RN license verification happen in the first nursing course, well before that clinical.

Timing: what Liberty publishes and what it doesn't

Liberty publishes no deadline in days or weeks for naming a preceptor or site. The timing signals are structural: the Gate course a semester before the first NP practicum, NURS 527 in the first MSN semester, and state rules that need lead time.

Some of those state rules are firm. Alabama's notice must arrive “a minimum of 15 days in advance of all APRN clinicals,” per Liberty's Alabama page, and Liberty files it only after approving your paperwork. Louisiana must approve each clinical facility before the start date, and New Jersey receives program, preceptor and site details in advance. The state board notices page covers each state.

So the working deadline is set by the slowest link: a facility's legal review, an expired immunization record, or a board's notice window. Ask the practicum team what they need from you, and by when, for your specific term.

Where placements usually stall

• A lead who won't commit. A preceptor who says maybe but never confirms leaves you with nothing to submit. Get a clear yes before you pass a name on.
• The facility's own contract. Liberty's 2022-23 MSN handbook warns that a facility's own contract “may delay the approval process.”
• A state Liberty can't use. NP practicums cannot be placed in California, New York, Washington or DC, and every MSN track excludes DC.
• A license in the wrong state. Your RN license must be valid where the practicum happens: that state's own license, or a multistate license where accepted.
• Compliance lapses. A background check past its window or a missing immunization record can hold up everything behind it.
• Declining on distance with no backup. Read how the distance rule works before you turn an offer down.
