Liberty's PMHNP certificate: two practicums, 504 hours, one prescriber rule

Who the certificate is for, and how it runs

This is a post-master's route into psychiatric practice. Admission asks for an RN license from an approved state and an MSN or DNP in an approved advanced practice specialty from a CCNE- or ACEN-accredited program. Liberty reviews your pathophysiology, pharmacology and health assessment courses to see whether they covered the lifespan, and may add up to three courses if they didn't.

The catalog lists 18 credits, taken online and all through Liberty, with a two-year limit to finish. The web page describes 8-week online courses with some 16-week courses mixed in. Next starts are January 18, 2027, May 17, 2027 and August 23, 2027.

Didactic work comes first: NURS 751 on neurobiology and differential diagnosis, NURS 752 Clinical Psychopharmacology, and NURS 753 on psychotherapeutic theories and modalities. The zero-credit Gates, NURS 745 and NURS 746, collect your practicum requirements, and the PMHNP comprehensive exam, NURS 821, closes the certificate.

Two practicums, split by population

The catalog divides the certificate's clinical work by age group, which shapes who you need to find. A preceptor whose caseload spans every age group might cover both; otherwise you'll need two placements.

An older Liberty PMHNP FAQ matches these numbers and notes that CCNE requires at least 500 precepted hours. It also says the two practicums can't run in the same semester, so plan for two separate terms of clinical time.

The course-number conflict

Liberty's sources don't agree on this certificate's structure. The catalog gives 18 credits with NURS 754 and 755. The online program page lists 19 credits and three practicums, NURS 768, 769 and 770, the same numbers used in the PMHNP doctorates, and states no hours for them. The older FAQ gives yet another credit count, 17.

For your preceptor search, the question that matters is how many hours each term needs and which populations each course covers. Under the catalog version, you'd be looking for an adult and geriatric placement first, then a pediatric and family placement. Under the three-course version, the split hasn't been published.

Before you ask a preceptor for a block of hours, confirm which structure your start term follows in the Gate course or with the practicum team. Preceptors: prescribers for half the hours

The older FAQ names PMHNPs and psychiatrists as the approved preceptors and says half of each practicum must be completed with a prescriber: 112 of the 224 hours in NURS 754 and 140 of the 280 hours in NURS 755. Liberty approves all sites and preceptors before placement. No newer public rule has replaced this, so ask the practicum team whether it still holds for your term.

NURS 755 is where planning matters most. The preceptor's caseload has to include pediatric clients and families, which rules out adult-only practices. Look for that placement early, even while you're still in didactic courses.

Telehealth is allowed for up to 50% of practicum hours in all of Liberty's PMHNP programs, including this one. That can help when a qualified psychiatric prescriber practices mostly by video, but the other half still needs to be in person. The telehealth page covers the details.

Capped enrollment and the practicum team

The certificate page says enrollment may be limited to ensure practicum placement and student success, so eligible applicants can be waitlisted or admitted to a later term. That tells you how seriously Liberty weighs placement capacity for this program.

Once you're in, the same collaborative partnership described on the doctoral pages applies. Liberty's dedicated practicum team aims to match each student with a preceptor and site and encourages students to bring their own leads. The assigned term may not be your first choice, travel may be required, and declining a provided site because of distance means finding a new one yourself.

Site or preceptor fees are the student's responsibility and are negotiated with the site, and Liberty says it can't control a facility's added onboarding requirements or fees. The practicum team page covers how to share leads with the coordinators.

States closed to certificate practicum

Certificate practicum can't take place in California, New York, Washington or the District of Columbia, and anyone living in Puerto Rico, Guam or another U.S. territory must use one of the 50 states. Liberty's licensure lookup still lists the certificate as meeting education requirements everywhere; the limit is on where practicum can happen. If you live in one of those places, both practicum terms need a site in an approved state.

Whichever approved state you use, your RN license has to be good there, either that state's own or a multistate license it recognizes. For Arizona, Liberty's notes say PMHNP students need both Arizona APRN and Arizona RN licensure, or a multistate RN license, to complete practicum there.
