Liberty nursing practicum in Maine
Maine appears as approved for practicum under each Liberty online nursing program, and a multistate RN license from a compact home state is valid here. We found no Maine rule on out-of-state programs placing students. The planning problem is practical: Maine's metros are small, so build in the possibility of longer drives.

Plan for distance
Maine's three metros are small: census estimates put Portland-South Portland at about 578,000 people, Bangor near 158,000 and Lewiston-Auburn near 116,000. Liberty already warns NP students that, because preceptors are scarce, they may need to travel longer distances, and that the assigned term may not match their first preference.
Liberty's decline rule is worth knowing before any offer arrives. If you turn down a site Liberty provides because of distance, you'll be asked to find a new one yourself. Decide before your Gate course how far you can drive on a practicum day, and read practicum site distance for how to handle an offer that's too far. PMHNP students can shorten some weeks with telehealth; FNP students can't.
Declining a Liberty-offered site because it's too far means finding the replacement yourself.
Where Maine students look
The main systems in our research are Central Maine Healthcare, MaineGeneral Health, MaineHealth and Northern Light Health. Name them as a starting point, not as Liberty partners; a rural practice or community clinic can work too if Liberty approves it. We have no Maine preceptor incentive on record.
If a site in New Hampshire is closer, it works too: New Hampshire is approved for every Liberty program and sits in the compact, so one multistate license covers both states.
Maine's rules and out-of-state programs
Our research turned up no rule or guidance from the Maine State Board of Nursing about programs based elsewhere sending students to clinical sites in Maine. Chapter 7, the Board's education rule, deals with approving prelicensure programs in Maine and says nothing about placements from other states. Neither the Board's list of rules nor its education pages point to any guidance on the subject. Liberty's Maine page names no extra step either.
Under 32 MRSA §2103(2), Maine's Nurse Practice Act does not require a license for nursing performed as an integral part of a board-approved program that leads to initial licensure. The exemption targets pre-licensure students. As a Liberty graduate or RN-to-BSN student you're already licensed, and Liberty requires that license to be valid in Maine.
Full practice after 24 months, and your license
In AANP's ratings, Maine is full practice for an NP who has finished 24 or more months either supervised by a physician or NP or employed by a hospital or clinic that has a physician medical director. Newer NPs may still be in that window, which governs their practice, not whether Liberty accepts them. Liberty's FNP preceptor rules aren't public; see preceptor requirements.
Maine has participated in the Nurse Licensure Compact since January 19, 2018. Liberty's practicum-state license rule is satisfied by a Maine RN license or by a multistate license from any other compact state. Maine hasn't enacted the APRN Compact. More on RN license for practicum.

Questions Liberty students ask
Is a multistate RN license enough for Liberty practicum in Maine?
Yes. Maine joined the compact in January 2018, so an active multistate license from your compact home state works there, which is what Liberty's license rule asks for. If your license is single-state from a non-compact state, you'll need a Maine RN license first.
Who can precept a Liberty PMHNP student in Maine?
Liberty hasn't posted current PMHNP preceptor rules. Its older PMHNP FAQ limited approved preceptors to PMHNPs and psychiatrists and set aside half of every practicum's hours for time with a prescriber. A Maine PMHNP past the 24-month supervised period practices independently, but Liberty's approval, not Maine law, decides who can precept you.
Does Maine require approval for out-of-state nursing programs' clinicals?
We found no Maine rule or Board guidance requiring it. The education rule is about approving Maine's own prelicensure programs, and nothing on out-of-state placements is linked from the Board's rules list or education pages. Liberty's Maine page doesn't name an extra step. If a facility asks, refer it to Liberty's practicum team.
Where can a Liberty MSN Community Health student do practicum in Maine?
Liberty's current catalog puts MSN students in charge of choosing a facility and securing a site contract before practicum. The 2022-23 MSN handbook placed Community Health practicum in a community or public health setting. In Maine, local agencies or the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention are candidates, if Liberty approves the site and preceptor.
