Planning a Liberty practicum in Iowa
Iowa is open for practicum on every Liberty online nursing program. Out-of-state programs don't need approval from the Iowa Board of Nursing, though the board spells out duties they still carry, and it expects post-licensure students like you to hold an Iowa or multistate license. Iowa NPs have full practice authority.

Hours come from Liberty's 2026-27 catalog; the clinical hours page explains the conflicts between sources. Totals like these shape how far you can sensibly travel to a site.
Iowa's checklist for out-of-state programs
Nursing programs from other states aren't approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing. Even so, the board's criteria page sets out obligations for them:
- use clinical contracts that cover termination, annual review, faculty control of student learning and the responsibilities of each party
- confirm that nursing faculty and preceptors working in Iowa have an active Iowa or multistate license
- provide data to the Board when asked
- comply with Iowa law in addition to the rules of their home state
- reach out to the Bureau of Iowa College Aid about approval to operate in Iowa
All five fall on Liberty, not on you. Liberty's standing with the Bureau of Iowa College Aid is Liberty's to confirm, and its lookup already lists Iowa as approved. If a site asks about any of this, point it to Liberty's practicum team.
Your license, and an exemption that isn't for you
Iowa's Nurse Licensure Compact membership took effect on January 19, 2018. According to the board, a post-licensure student doing clinicals in Iowa needs an active license, either Iowa-issued or multistate, and must practice in line with Iowa Code. Liberty's rule is the same.
Iowa Code 152.1 has a student exemption, but it is limited to unlicensed nursing students performing nursing within their course of study. A person holding an RN, LPN or ARNP license from any state falls outside it, so no Liberty student qualifies. Iowa hasn't enacted the APRN Compact. More in our RN license guide.
Who can precept you in Iowa
AANP rates Iowa as full practice, its least restrictive category; Iowa's rules call NPs ARNPs. According to the board, preceptors are approved by both the nursing program and the clinical facility.
Under 481 IAC 616.16, which governs ARNP program preceptorships, the majority of a student's experiences should come with an ARNP or a physician practicing in the same role and population focus. Preceptors need a license in the state where they practice, and each written preceptorship agreement gets an annual review. Our research doesn't show how Liberty applies that rule, so ask. A small reason for Iowa nurses to say yes
Iowa counts precepting toward license renewal. Precepting a nursing student for 60 hours or more within an organized preceptorship program earns a nurse 6 contact hours, provided the supervising institution documents it. Mention it when you ask, and check with the practicum team that Liberty will supply the documentation. No Iowa preceptor tax credit or stipend program appears in our research.
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the Quad Cities
Des Moines-West Des Moines is Iowa's largest metro, followed by Cedar Rapids and Iowa City; roughly 175,000 more Iowans are in the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro. MercyOne, UnityPoint Health and University of Iowa Health Care are the state's big systems, none a known Liberty partner. For Community Health students, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is a reasonable first stop.

Questions Liberty students ask
Does the Iowa Board of Nursing approve Liberty's nursing programs?
No, because it doesn't approve out-of-state programs at all. It lists what they must do instead, such as getting in touch with the Bureau of Iowa College Aid about approval to operate in Iowa and signing clinical contracts with set terms. Liberty's lookup shows Iowa as approved for practicum; the practicum team can answer questions about Liberty's side.
Can I use a multistate license from another state for clinicals in Iowa?
Yes. Iowa is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, and the board requires an active Iowa or multistate license of any post-licensure student in an Iowa clinical. Liberty's rule is the same. Keep your license active through every practicum term, and report any change in status to Liberty's Online Student Support Coordinator.
Can a physician precept a Liberty NP student in Iowa?
Under Iowa's ARNP preceptorship rule, a physician or an ARNP in the same role and population focus should handle most of a student's experiences. Liberty's own rules still decide: FNP preceptor credentials aren't public, and an older PMHNP FAQ lists PMHNPs and psychiatrists. Confirm with the practicum team before you ask a physician.
I live in Davenport. Can I do practicum in Moline or Rock Island?
Only with an Illinois RN license, since Illinois isn't in the Nurse Licensure Compact and Liberty's Illinois pages ask for Illinois's own license. Illinois rules also list items out-of-state programs must submit for clinical placement. An Iowa site keeps things simpler if one is available.
