The Gate course is open and you still need a preceptor

Where you are on Liberty's calendar

Liberty collects practicum paperwork through zero-credit Gate courses, each described as the place where candidates submit practicum requirements. On the NP degree plans, the first Gate course sits a full semester before the first practicum, which is the nearest thing Liberty gives to a lead time.

If your Gate course is already open, you are inside the window Liberty planned for. If your practicum course starts next term and nothing is in place, tell the practicum team now and ask what date your paperwork must reach them.

What takes longest, and why

Finding a willing clinician is only the first step. The items below often take longer than the search itself, so start them in parallel rather than one after another.

• The site contract. Liberty prefers sites that accept its own affiliation agreement. The 2022-23 MSN handbook warns that a facility's own contract may delay approval and that Liberty is under no obligation to sign it.
• Compliance. The DNP and NP pathways list AHA BLS, a background check and drug screen, and the Immunization/Physical Exam Form. Under the 2022-23 MSN handbook, a flagged background result goes to a review committee and placement pauses.
• State board steps. In Alabama, Liberty's School of Nursing must notify the board at least 15 days before APRN clinicals, and it files only after approving your paperwork. Louisiana needs its board to approve the facility before your start date, and New Jersey needs program, preceptor and site details first.
• Preceptor documents. The preceptor's CV, license details and work contact information all have to be collected from a busy clinician.

A triage order when the term is close

1. Ask for your dateEmail the practicum team (APRN.DNPPracticum@liberty.edu for NP and DNP tracks) with your term and ask when your paperwork must be complete. MSN students ask through NURS 527.
2. Clear your own complianceMake sure every item is current in CastleBranch so your side is never the hold-up. Our clinical clearance checklist lists what Liberty asks for.
3. Confirm the stateCheck that your practicum state is approved for your program and that your RN license is valid there.
4. Favor leads that can sign quicklyAsk each interested site early whether it will accept Liberty's agreement or insist on its own. See the site contract.
5. Build the preceptor packetCollect the CV, license numbers and site details while the clinician is still keen.
6. Check for a board stepIf your state has a notice or facility approval step, build it into your timing. State board notices lists them.

Shortcuts that cost more time than they save

Pressure makes some options look better than they are. Each of these tends to send you back to the beginning.

• Taking a telehealth site on the FNP track, where Liberty does not allow telehealth sites.
• Leaning on telehealth for more than half of your PMHNP hours, which is past Liberty's 50% limit.
• Starting at a site before Liberty approves it. The 2022-23 MSN handbook says Liberty's malpractice cover applies only to Liberty-scheduled practicum.
• Logging hours outside the course term. The same handbook says MSN hours count only within term dates and only after you have met your preceptor.
• Accepting a preceptor whose credential doesn't fit your course just because they said yes quickly.

When the window may be too short

Sometimes a given term can't work. Practicum courses run in sequence: NURS 772 requires NURS 771, and NURS 769 requires NURS 768, so a missed start can move the courses behind it. Talk to your advisor (dnp@liberty.edu for DNP tracks) before the term begins, not after it has started without a site.

The PMHNP certificate page adds that enrollment may be limited to protect practicum placement, a reminder that Liberty plans around preceptor supply. If you do decide to push the practicum back, keep searching anyway: a preceptor confirmed early for the next term is worth more than a rushed one for this term.

Liberty runs its own approval and each board sets its own timing, so a placement advisor plans the search around both from the first day.

Each lead is checked against Liberty's published rules before it reaches you, so scarce weeks aren't spent on a site that could never be approved. We assemble the preceptor's CV, license details and site information for the Gate course and site contract, and the approval comes from Liberty.
