The registration you file yourself

The Alaska Board of Nursing's FAQ tells APRN students they have to apply to the Board for a preceptorship. 12 AAC 44.460 makes this a registration of you as an individual. It covers a student doing clinical practice in Alaska while enrolled in an APRN course of study based in another state, and it does not approve Liberty's program.

1. Settle the preceptorship firstThe Board looks for a preceptorship arrangement it approves, and the evidence is a copy of the four-party agreement between you, your preceptor, the facility and the school. Liberty signs that agreement too, so work it out with the school first.
2. Gather your proofYou'll need an RN license in good standing, which can come from Alaska or from another state, and proof that your APRN program enrollment is current.
3. Submit form 08-4253The APRN Preceptorship Registration form goes to the Board with a non-refundable fee.
4. Watch the expiryA registration lasts no more than 12 months and stops early if your preceptorship finishes before then. The Board allows one renewal.

Out-of-state faculty face a license rule of their own. When the clinical grading and other nursing education they do in Alaska goes beyond 20 working days in a licensing period, they need an Alaska RN license. Who can precept an APRN student in Alaska

The Board's form sets the bar. Your preceptor must be an APRN or physician whose license or privilege to practice is active and unencumbered, must share a comparable practice focus, and is responsible for supervising, teaching and evaluating you in the clinical setting. AANP counts Alaska among its full practice states, with nothing further noted.

Your license: Alaska stays outside the compact

Alaska remains outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, and no bill to join it has made it through the legislature. The APRN Compact isn't enacted either.

Liberty's pages tie your RN license to the state where the hours happen, and since Alaska honors no multistate license, that points to an Alaska RN license. The Board's student registration, though, will take an RN license issued by Alaska or by some other state. Anchorage, Fairbanks and the distance question

Anchorage leads with a metro population near 406,000 in the 2025 Census estimates. Fairbanks-College had roughly 94,000, and the Juneau area roughly 31,600. In Anchorage you'll find Providence Alaska Medical Center, run by Providence, which operates more Alaska hospitals than anyone else, plus Alaska Regional Hospital (HCA Healthcare) and the tribal Alaska Native Medical Center. Farther out are Foundation Health Partners in Fairbanks and Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer. Our research shows no Liberty agreement with these systems. Liberty warns NP students that preceptor scarcity can mean long trips, and if you refuse a provided site because it's too far, the replacement search falls to you. Read site distance before you say no to anything.
